Why AI chatbots are so hard to put down — and is 'AI psychosis' real?
"AI psychosis" has become a runaway search term — about 22,200 lookups a month — as people worry that heavy chatbot use is rewiring their minds. Two questions hide inside the panic: why is the thing so sticky, and is the scary new label actually science?
You open the app to ask one quick question. Forty minutes later you're still typing. The chatbot never gets bored, never judges, never tells you it's busy. That pull is not a personal weakness — it is engineered persuasion, and Robert Cialdini named most of its parts in Influence decades before anyone trained a language model.
It likes you back — instantly
Cialdini's liking weapon fires when someone is similar to us, compliments us, and warms to us fast. A chatbot does all three on autopilot: it mirrors your tone, agrees with your framing, and praises your "great question." We drop our guard for people who seem to like us — and a model that flatters and echoes you trips that switch on every single turn. Cialdini's rule of thumb was to watch the result, not the technique: if you feel an oddly strong warmth toward a stranger or a tool, that very feeling is the tell that the liking lever is being pulled. With a model the similarity is manufactured — it has no opinions of its own to clash with yours, so it can be your mirror perfectly, every time, in a way no human friend ever could.
Layered on top is reciprocity. The assistant "gives" first — free help, free drafts, free patience — and the felt debt nudges you to keep coming back. Nothing was actually owed, but the instinct doesn't check the invoice. The honest defense is symmetrical: when a favor is being used as a hook, treat it as a hook. You are allowed to take the free draft and walk away; the obligation you feel is a reflex, not a contract.
Every reply is a small jackpot
The deeper hook is commitment and consistency. A long, ongoing conversation quietly builds an identity: "I'm the kind of person who talks things through with this." Each session is a small commitment, and we escalate to stay consistent with the self we've been performing. The chat history itself becomes the commitment device — scroll up and there is documentary proof of who you've been here, and abandoning it feels like abandoning a relationship. Cialdini's antidote is a single question pointed at your own past self: knowing what I know now, would I have started this?
Add an authority cue — the model's confident, fluent, never-hedging voice reads as expertise — and you stop second-guessing it. Authority shortcuts ask two things of us that fluency quietly skips: is this a real authority, and is it being honest on this specific point? A model that sounds certain about everything passes neither test, because it sounds exactly as certain when it's wrong. Finally there's the oldest trick of all: an instant, slightly-different answer every time is an intermittent reward, the same variable schedule that keeps a slot machine spinning. Predictable rewards bore us; unpredictable ones — will this reply be brilliant or just okay? — keep the hand reaching for the lever. But is "AI psychosis" a real thing?
Here Keith Stanovich's toolkit from How to Think Straight About Psychology earns its keep. Start with falsifiability: ask what evidence would make "AI psychosis" wrong. A label that stretches to cover anyone uneasy after chatting with a bot explains everything and therefore predicts nothing — and a claim that can't be wrong isn't strong, it's empty. The first test of any psychological claim is not "can you find cases that fit?" but "can you say what would not fit?" If the answer is "nothing," the term is doing storytelling, not science.
The viral stories are testimonials — vivid, memorable, and worth roughly zero as causal evidence. Stanovich's reason is precise: a single dramatic case can't rule out the alternative explanations baked into every testimonial — the person may have been struggling before they opened the app, may have recovered or relapsed for unrelated reasons, and the very vividness that makes the story spread is what makes it misleading. A thousand retold anecdotes don't add up to one controlled comparison; they just feel like more.
That's the correlation-is-not-causation trap, and it has three escape routes worth naming out loud. Heavy AI use and distress may travel together, but: the arrow could run the other way (lonely, anxious people seek the bot out — B causes A); a third variable like isolation or a sleep-wrecking crisis could drive both at once; or the link could be milder than the headline implies. The loneliness epidemic that frames this whole panic is real, but it cuts both ways — if lonely people both use chatbots more and suffer more, the chatbot can look guilty while doing nothing.
Then there's the magic-bullet reflex — the urge to pin a messy outcome on one cause. Human distress is multiply determined: biology, life events, sleep, substances, and isolation interact. "The chatbot did it" is exactly the single-cause story the evidence almost never supports. And notice how the word arrived: not from peer-reviewed clinical literature, but as a phrase the media amplified into a category, because a crisp two-word label travels faster than a careful caveat. None of this makes the worry fake. It means the honest filing is "genuine open question," not "diagnosis" — we separate a possible real clinical phenomenon from the inflated label stuck on top of it.
How to use it without losing the plot
Both lenses point the same way: respect the pull, distrust the label. A few habits follow directly. Name the weapon — knowing the warmth and agreeableness are features, not friendship, weakens them, because a persuasion trigger you can see has already half lost its grip. Keep the bot in its lane: brilliant for drafting, searching, and thinking out loud, but not a stand-in for the friends, sleep, and sunlight that actually move loneliness. Set a stop rule before you start, so the intermittent-reward loop can't quietly extend the session for you. And when a headline hands you a tidy new psychological condition, run the three gates before you believe it: is it falsifiable, what grade is the evidence — testimonial, correlation, or controlled study — and has a correlation been smuggled in as a cause? Worry is allowed; a diagnosis has to be earned.
