But all of that watches the wrong hand. The scroll is only the loud half of the debt. The quiet half is that we have started outsourcing not just our attention, but our thinking — to the autocomplete box and the chatbot — and that bill doesn't arrive as a puffy attention span. It arrives as a mind that has quietly forgotten how to do the work itself.
Liu Weipeng, a Chinese programmer-writer, spent a whole book on this years before the AI wave, and his title is the best metaphor we have for it: dark time. The dark time is the hours your brain keeps computing in the background — in the shower, on a walk, half-asleep — chewing on a problem you loaded earlier.
