They are, it must be said, extremely cute. Three snow-white pups named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, tumbling across the internet under headlines announcing that the dire wolf — the Ice Age predator extinct for 12,000 years, lately famous from a fantasy show — was back. A company had de-extincted a species. It was the most exciting thing in biotech, its founder said in 2026. It was also, several scientists insisted, not really true. And settling that argument turns out to need a book from 1976.
The most adorable scientific dispute of the decade
The company, Colossal Biosciences, did something genuinely impressive: it read ancient dire-wolf DNA, identified genes behind a few signature traits, and edited roughly 20 of them into the cells of a modern gray wolf, producing pups with a dire wolf's pale coat and heavier build. From there, the language got slippery. "De-extinct." "Brought back." Critics pushed back fast. "I don't think they de-extincted anything," said stem-cell biologist Jeanne Loring; what Colossal made, the skeptics argued, is a gray wolf with about 20 edits — a designer animal wearing dire-wolf features, not a lost species reborn.
