Ask four credible insiders when machines will match human minds and you get four answers two decades apart. Anthropic's Dario Amodei says it could be 2026 — this year. OpenAI's Sam Altman points to roughly 2029. Ray Kurzweil, who once said 2045, has quietly moved human-level AI up to about 2032. And the people closest to the math — a pool of roughly 9,800 forecasts compiled by analysts — still land on a median near 2040, with the surveyed researchers giving better-than-even odds only by 2040–2045. Same technology, same headlines, same week. A nineteen-year spread. The interesting question isn't who's right. It's why brilliant, informed, honest people see the same curve and read wildly different futures off it.

Why the optimists feel it's close
If you genuinely believe progress compounds, then the gap between "useful but flawed" and "smarter than us" looks small — one or two more doublings, a few years, not a generation. The most useful posture isn't picking the winning year; it's living as if the lily might already be on day twenty-eight, while admitting, honestly, that you cannot see the bottom of the pond.
