You've seen the headline. Some version of "loneliness rots your brain," or "feeling alone causes dementia," paired with a stock photo of an elderly hand on a windowsill. It's built to scare, and it works. But in April 2026 a study landed that says something quieter and far more precise — and the gap between what the data found and what the headline implies is one of the cleanest examples of a thinking error I've seen all year. Why "loneliness still matters" is also true

When a "study links X to brain decline" lands in your feed, ask one question: is the difference in where people start, or in how fast they change? Headlines collapse those two without telling you, because "they're lower" and "they're falling faster" feel like the same dread. They are not. A baseline gap can be explained by a hundred third factors and changes nothing about your trajectory. A slope difference is the only thing that would justify panic — and it's the one this study explicitly ruled out. Read for the verb. "Starts lower" is a snapshot. "Declines faster" is a slope. Most fear lives in the gap between them, and most of that fear is misplaced.
